2020 Texas Youth Tobacco Survey

Covington ISD is one of 200 schools throughout Texas selected to be part of a statewide sample for the 2020 Texas Youth Tobacco Survey. The Texas Youth Tobacco Survey is sponsored by the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and conducted by the Public Policy Research Institute (PPRI) at Texas A&M University. PPRI also conducts the Texas School Survey which you may be familiar with.

The sample of students for the Texas Youth Tobacco School Survey is designed to be a random sample of all public school students between sixth and twelfth grades in the state of Texas. It is estimated that 15,000 students will participate in the 2020 Texas Youth Tobacco Survey. Because only a random selection of schools are chosen to participate, it is very important that those included in the statewide sample participate in the Texas Youth Tobacco Survey in order for results to be as accurate as possible.

The students between sixth and twelfth grades will be taking the survey online Monday, December 2, 2019. This survey is free and will count as one of our School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) activities for the year. The survey itself is anonymous and no personal identifiers will be reported. I have attached an “information sheet” for your review, and at the bottom of the sheet there is a section where you can sign if your child MAY NOT participate in the Texas Youth Tobacco Survey. Please return these to the school by Friday, November 22, 2019.

If you have any questions, or need information, please contact Mrs. Heskett or myself at (254)854-2215, or via email at or
